Blackpool Illuminations: How Are LEDs Making Them Greener?

13 January 2023

Internationally known as the greatest lighting display, Blackpool Illuminations are a spectacular tradition that hundreds of thousands of people enjoy annually. Over the decades, the designs have become more adventurous to maintain their sense of wonder, but the way they were lit remained largely the sameโ€”until the recent introduction of LEDs.

The LED Revolution in Blackpool Illuminations

LEDs have grown in popularity every year, becoming a staple in homes and workplaces. Thanks to their reliability and exceptional colour range, LEDs have now revolutionised the Blackpool Illuminations.

For years, this iconic event ran for 66 days, from late August to early November. However, since 2020, visitors have enjoyed an extended viewing period. In 2022, the Blackpool Illuminations were on from September 2nd to January 2nd, 2023. This extension, initially inspired by the need for cheer during the Covid-19 pandemic, has allowed more people to experience the magic.

The choice of lighting is crucial for the millions of lights required across the 6.2 miles of Blackpoolโ€™s streets. Since 2002, LEDs have increasingly replaced older lighting systems, and they are now the standard for new installations. Organisers are continually seeking ways to reduce costs and improve energy efficiency, and LEDs have proven essential in meeting these needs, especially during the ongoing energy crisis.

Previously, the illuminations cost roughly ยฃ2.4 million annually to present, taking 22 weeks to construct the 500+ displays. However, over the last two decades, as LEDs became more prominent, the event's running cost has decreased to ยฃ1.75 million, with 30% of the displays now featuring a million LEDs.

Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impact

The energy efficiency of LEDs drives their growing use, as they waste far less electricity than traditional lighting sources. LEDs are 80% more efficient than incandescent bulbs, losing only 5% of energy as heat. This efficiency has enabled organisers to cut costs while maintaining the grandeur of the Blackpool Illuminations.

Inspired by the success of these displays, Blackpool has started replacing all sodium-based public lights with superior LEDs. Changing these streetlights, signage, and traffic signals has already reduced the city's energy usage by 75%, with even greater savings expected once the transition is complete in 2023.

A Green Future for Blackpool Illuminations

Annually, many UK-based LED light manufacturers contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the Blackpool Illuminations. They help the city create unforgettable memories for new generations. Since 1879, this festival of light has captivated visitors, evolving into the greatest free light show on earth. The modern-style display, introduced in 1912 during a royal visit, has only grown in complexity and popularity.

The history of Blackpool deeply roots in Blackpool Illuminations. Many have fond memories of this traditional event, often unaware of the green energy powering it. Energy consumption has always been a challenge for the Illuminations, which attract roughly 3.5 million visitors annually.

In 2004, wind turbines were introduced to help power the event, marking the start of a shift towards green energy sources. Today, renewable energy, including hydropower, wind, and biogas, entirely powers the Blackpool Illuminations. As of 2020, this transition has reduced 420 tonnes of carbon emissions to zero, setting the event on a path to being carbon neutral.

Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Lighting

These changes, combined with increasing investment in LED lighting, have reduced the energy required whilst sourcing power from renewable sources. Furthermore, manufacturers use non-toxic, recyclable materials to make LEDs, making them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice.

As a result, the Blackpool Illuminations continue to grow, offering a family-friendly tourist attraction that honours tradition while embracing sustainability.
